‘Letting a Room in London-House’: A Place for Dissent in Civil War London

‘Letting a Room in London-House’: A Place for Dissent in Civil War London Kathleen Lynch, Folger Shakespeare Library We are delighted to welcome Kathleen Lynch from the Folger Shakespeare Library to Queen's University to give a guest lecture on ‘Letting a Room in London-House’: A Place for Dissent in Civil War London: Abstract: We have been gaining fresh perspectives on the history of religious toleration with closer attention to the ways the built environment frames social dynamics. This paper focuses on one singular episode to tease out some unexpected causes and consequences when the very center of ecclesiastical authority no longer holds. “Waste” rooms may become available to rent in the Bishop of London’s palace on the grounds of St. Paul’s Cathedral, for instance, as happened in 1647. Among the issues flagged for consideration are jurisdictions and protective authorities, certain architectural forms conducive to large gatherings, and distinct features of the urban landscape. Close study of this fleeting moment in the formation of religious identities and allegiances in a time of crisis opens up to a wider view of experimentation, contestation, and even opportunism in what we must understand to be an uneven history of religious accommodation.
